Question 1

What are online ESL teaching jobs?

Accepted Answer

Online ESL teaching jobs are English-language teaching positions delivered entirely over video call, without relocating. You teach live classes, run one-to-one tutoring sessions, or record content for a language platform — all from home. Employers include dedicated online language platforms, virtual language centers, and traditional schools that now offer remote teacher roles.

Question 2

How much do online ESL teachers earn?

Accepted Answer

Pay varies by platform and format. One-to-one tutoring platforms like iTalki typically pay $10–25/hour after platform fees. Structured platforms such as EF Online paid $14–22/hour for group classes. Corporate ESL teachers working directly with companies earn $20–40/hour. Top performers with strong reviews on marketplace platforms can earn $30–50/hour by setting their own rates.

Question 3

Do I need a degree to teach ESL online?

Accepted Answer

Many online platforms do not require a bachelor's degree. Cambly requires only native-level English and a webcam. iTalki, Preply also accept non-degree holders. Platforms serving Chinese students typically require a degree. A recognized 120-hour TEFL certificate strengthens any application and is often sufficient in place of a degree on flexible platforms.

Question 4

Can non-native English speakers get online ESL teaching jobs?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Many online platforms actively welcome non-native English speakers who hold a TEFL certificate and demonstrate C1 or higher English proficiency. iTalki, Preply, and Learnlight are particularly open to non-native teachers. ESLGorilla tags every listing to show whether it is open to non-native applicants.

Question 5

What equipment do I need to teach ESL online?

Accepted Answer

The standard setup is: a stable broadband connection (at least 10 Mbps upload), a USB or built-in HD webcam, a decent microphone or headset, and a quiet, well-lit background. Most platforms run on Zoom, Skype, or their own proprietary video software. A laptop or desktop computer is recommended over a mobile phone.

Question 6

What is the difference between online ESL jobs and remote ESL jobs?

Accepted Answer

Online ESL jobs and remote ESL jobs mean the same thing in practice — teaching English over video from home. 'Online ESL' usually refers to platform-based tutoring or virtual classroom roles. 'Remote ESL' sometimes signals that a traditional school is offering a work-from-home contract rather than operating through a platform.

Question 7

How do I get my first online ESL teaching job with no experience?

Accepted Answer

Start with flexible marketplace platforms like Cambly or iTalki that do not require a degree or prior classroom experience. Complete a 120-hour TEFL certificate first — it significantly increases your acceptance rate. Record a short demo lesson video. Apply to multiple platforms simultaneously. Once you have 20–30 hours logged, you become eligible for higher-paying platforms.

Question 8

Can I teach ESL online part-time?

Accepted Answer

Yes — part-time online ESL teaching is one of the most flexible arrangements available. Marketplace platforms let you set your own hours. Structured platforms offer shift-based scheduling where you select your available windows. Part-time online ESL teachers typically work 10–25 hours per week and earn $150–600/week depending on their rate and student load.

Question 9

What is the best time of day to teach ESL online?

Accepted Answer

The most in-demand windows align with peak student hours in your target market. For Chinese students, that means 6–9pm China Standard Time. For Korean and Japanese students, evening hours (7–10pm local time) are busiest. Latin American students prefer morning and late afternoon sessions. Flexibility across two or three time zones increases your booking rate significantly.

Question 10

What is the difference between TEFL and ESL for online teaching?

Accepted Answer

ESL (English as a Second Language) describes what you teach — English to non-native speakers. TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) describes your qualification — a certificate proving you are trained to teach it. For online teaching, you need both: an ESL teaching position (the job) and a TEFL certificate (the credential that makes you competitive).
