Question 1

What is an eikaiwa school?

Accepted Answer

Eikaiwa (英会話) means 'English conversation' in Japanese. Eikaiwa schools are private language academies that teach conversational English to Japanese students of all ages. They range from national chains (NOVA, ECC, AEON, Berlitz) to small independent schools. Most eikaiwa teachers work afternoon and evening shifts, teaching small groups or one-on-one sessions.

Question 2

How much do eikaiwa teachers earn in Japan?

Accepted Answer

Eikaiwa teachers typically earn JPY 220,000–310,000 per month (approximately $1,450–$2,050 USD). National chains tend to offer structured salary scales. Corporate English training roles within the eikaiwa sector often pay higher hourly rates. Most contracts include national health insurance and a commuting allowance.

Question 3

Do eikaiwa schools sponsor work visas for Japan?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Most eikaiwa schools and chains sponsor the Instructor visa (for teachers working in schools) or the Specialist in Humanities visa (for private language academies). The employer applies for a Certificate of Eligibility (CoE) on the teacher's behalf — processing typically takes 4–8 weeks.

Question 4

Do I need Japanese language skills to work at an eikaiwa school?

Accepted Answer

No. Eikaiwa schools require English-only instruction as a core part of their teaching methodology. Japanese language ability is not required and is often discouraged in the classroom. A bachelor's degree and TEFL certificate (or equivalent) are the standard entry requirements.
